But why do travellers prefer to rent a private home rather than a hotel room (no matter how luxurious)?

1. Living in peace and quiet (and away from prying eyes)

By renting a property in its entirety, travellers can enjoy an incognito holiday, away from the crowds, in total discretion. They prefer the intimacy and space of a private home to the setting of a hotel, where all the guests have to rub shoulders. This trend has been reinforced by the health context, which places a premium on social distancing.

No more overcrowded swimming pools, busy deckchairs or shared hammams... In a hotel (and even in the most luxurious ones), the facilities and spaces are shared between the different guests: garden, lounges, swimming pool, SPA, gym, etc. whereas they are reserved for the exclusive use of the tenants in the case of a stay in a private home.

3. A taste of freedom

A hotel dictates certain constraints (breakfast times, restaurant reservations, restrictions on children's access to the swimming pool, etc.) whereas a home offers total freedom. Renting private property also seems much more suited to large groups (families, friends, etc.) who enjoy the freedom of being able to invite friends as they wish, organise parties, let the children make noise, etc.  Something that is complicated, if not impossible, in the strict confines of a hotel.

4. Maximising value for money

Travellers optimise value for money through the vacation rental model: rates more suited to long stays (vs. nightly rates in a hotel), possibility of sharing the bill within the same group of guests.

5. Benefit from an enhanced offering and better locations

Smaller units (houses vs. hotels), fewer constraints linked to development, town planning, safety requirements, etc. mean that the vacation rental offer is richer (granularity) and more original (architecture, uniqueness, locations, etc.).
