Focus on… the fireplace by Ohla studio

The Iconic House Le Coeur du Ferret property, nestled in the heart of the Pointe, one of Le Ferret's most sought-after neighborhoods, is situated under the pines, in the heart of a lush eden, far from the crowds and glances. Its decor explores a Franco-Mexican connivance, a conversation between the two cultures. The large living room features a custom-made fireplace by Ohla, a Mexican design studio.

OHLA STUDIO is a design studio founded in 2017 by Giulia Zink and Mat Trumbull. The studio works closely with local artisans whose ancestral know-how is recognized. Through their creations, they deliver individual and authentic evocations that are both familiar and singular. The studio has created a collection of furniture and lighting based on the earliest known works of Mexican figurative art.

With its impressive height, the fireplace is one of the centerpieces of the living room. A pictorial stroll takes shape in the living room, and the following scenario is imagined: a Mexican family who once lived in the house has left its own memories here... The pink stone comes specially from Mexico, a stone renowned for its resistance and widely used in Mexico. The stone is embellished with embossed shapes, paying homage to a tradition of Mexican art: the ex-voto.

WHAT ARE EX-VOTOS?

Sacred signs, symbols, hearts or crosses, ex-votos are handcrafted with heart and soul by Mexican artisans, mainly from the Guanajuato region. Borrowed from Latin, the term ex-voto (after wish) is an offering made to a deity in request or thanksgiving for a grace obtained as a result of a vow made. These symbolic objects can take different forms and be made of different materials, to adorn the walls of places of worship, or to decorate and embellish interiors. The designs on the mantelpiece therefore refer not only to this Mexican tradition, but also to the places, landscapes, culture and life of Cap-Ferret. Like a patchwork of correspondences and memories between the two cultures.

A MULTI-CULTURAL DIALOGUE

This singular work reflects the journey proposed by the Coeur du Ferret estate between the two cultures. The engraved symbols are the result of a reflection based on the union of two elements (one referring to Mexico, the other to Cap Ferret) placed in parallel: oyster park and Mexican temples, pine forest and agave, oyster farming and net fishing, wheat and corn, eagle and snake...
