A delicious alternative to the tumult of the waves, the peaceful lake is one of the jewels in Hossegor's crown. This jewel is fed by ocean water thanks to the construction of the Hossegor canal. As far as history is concerned, it was a diversion of the Adour (a river that rises in the Hautes-Pyrénées and whose mouth towards the Atlantic has changed over the centuries, gradually shaping the Landes landscape) in the 16th century that gave birth to the lake, which was initially a freshwater lake.

Around the lake are some of the most beautiful villas, much to the admiration and envy of strollers. At the end of the 19th century, only a few fishermen's huts were scattered around the lake. The seaside resort as such came into being in the 1930s. It is said that it was the arts, literature and sport that gave the area its elegant popularity. The first to set their sights on this corner of paradise were Parisian artists and intellectuals, aesthetes whose spirit can still be felt today. It was during this period that a host of splendid ‘Basque-Landesque’ villas sprang up, designed by a host of inspired architects such as Louis Lagrange and Henri Godbarge. A style that borrows from neo-classical, Hispanic and Art Deco aesthetics, characterised by its white and Basque red facades, use of wood, corbelling, brickwork, columns...

Since then, the area has undergone harmonious, rational development. A prized, unspoilt Eldorado. At the heart of an area where it's easy to disconnect, no doubt to reconnect better. With what's essential.
